“How do you define loneliness?” was the first question asked by the artist Susanne Giring in her interview with the Belgian concept artist Gauthier Hubert. In her works, Giring looks at the motif of the figure in space. Most of her works are large-format, and these clearly structured paintings are characterised by a profound atmosphere of calm. Nevertheless, the portrayals in Giring’s paintings of people lost in a world of their own project self-possession and strength; the artist experiences loneliness as a natural state of affairs, the observation of the quiet hidden inner world of each person.
The Ferndale (after a novel by J. Conrad) is a ship that gets lost in the calm distance of the sea, no longer able to navigate, and, then being pushed on by the wind of a powerful storm, reaches its goal, almost sailing blind … This literary image describes a process for the artist that is documented in the many paintings in this catalogue.
