Thomas Graics

abstraction of nature

Thomas Graics’ images of Iceland are the culmination of his many years of experience as a pilot, painter and photographer.

Iceland is famous for its huge, glacier-covered mountains, green valleys and barren, black lava fields, traversed by milky-coloured glacial rivers. The specific mineral content lends the rivers their special appearance, diffusing the light. At certain times of the day, the rivers themselves seem to radiate light.

In Graics’ photos of these geologically impressive phenomena, which have fascinated the artist for years, perspective, as in the case of abstract paintings, is repressed and the landscape is abstracted onto the surface, formal oppositions come to life thanks to a harmonious collaboration of colours and forms.
