Simon Czapla

This volume offers for the first time an in-depth look at a number of series by the young painter Simon Czapla. Whilst the classic portrait is currently undergoing a new interpretation in which the familiar contemplation unexpectedly turns into observation, the series – to be completed by 2013 – with its opulently staged, expressive scenery and portraits, opens up Czapla’s cryptic view of a reality shaped by transformations. In  addition to a fascinating wealth of invention and a skilfulness characteristic of the old masters, all of the works are linked by the momentum of a provocative confusion.
