Erika Schmied
Im Profil: Künstlerporträts aus 50 Jahren
With her camera, Erika Schmied has kept a careful watch on the international art scene of the last fifty years. The result is a series of portrait studies, all of which share one distinctive feature: they are all profile shots. Following on from the photographer´s experience and her realisation that a side view provides more information about the character of a person than a photo in which the subject is facing the camera, this collection includes a selection of photographs of important artists from Max Ernst and Giorgio de Chirico to Gerhard Richter and Georg Baselitz and also artist couples such as Anni & Josef Albers and Jean Tinguely & Niki de St. Phalle. In her essay Petra Kipphoff examines the interesting history of the profile in the arts to which Erika Schmied´s work has added a new chapter.
