Inventor of the Roman Baroque
Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680), who served under six popes, was highly esteemed during his lifetime as a sculptor, architect, painter, author, stage director and exceptionally gifted draughtsman. His many years of work as an inventor and designer of the Roman Baroque were exemplary for the development of Baroque art throughout Europe.
A good two hundred drawings by Bernini and his studio are in the possession of the Museum der bildenden Künste in Leipzig.
