John Cage/Milan Grygar
Chance Operations & Intention
The American composer, painter, and poet John Cage is considered the inventor of the happening, and godfather to the Fluxus movement. In the late 1960s meetings and friendships with artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and Marcel Duchamp inspired him to create his own paintings and series of prints. Milan Grygar is one of the Czech Republic’s most important avant-garde artists. His experiments with drawing and sound are outstanding. His works of art integrate coincidence and the sounds of machines or everyday life. In an expanded concept of art there are profound similarities between Grygar’s and Cage’s art. This publication introduces both experimental artists and their visual works of art.
