Franz Gertsch
Franz Gertsch is one of the most important Swiss artists today. In celebration of the artist’s eighty-fifth birthday, a catalog that provides a substantial look at his innovative work is being published. All too quickly categorized as a photorealist, Gertsch turns out to be an artist who is more interested in profundity and concentration than glittering surfaces. This is particularly obvious in his monumental woodcuts, which form the heart of this publication. Their motifs—gigantic, enlarged leaves or streams of water—cohere out of thousands of tiny points of light in right front of the viewer’s eyes.
