Erich Heckel
in den Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz
Erich Heckel is known as one of Germany’s most famous classic modern artists. He was a co-founder of the artists’ group, Die Brücke, as well as its chief executive, and exercised great influence over the development of German Expressionism. Like Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Heckel also grew up in Chemnitz. The companion catalogue to the exhibition at the Museum Gunzenhauser focuses on Heckel’s early days in Chemnitz—his family, his friendship with Schmidt-Rotluff, and founding of the Gruppe Vulkan—and is the first to present a complete survey of his works from the Chemnitz art collections, the Gunzenhauser Collection, and never-before-seen works on loan from private owners.
