Michael Gerngroß

Spuren / Traces

The latest works by the painter Michael Gerngroß, created since mid-2009, are fireworks of colour and structure. Applied in a range of different ways, from spraying to careful brushstrokes to the deliberate use of dripping paint, the artist plays with chance and intention, intensive colour and specific materiality. In some paintings, the colour seems to explode, before changing back into diffuse clouds of colour. In his adaption of Abstract Expressionism or graffiti from the 1980s, Gerngroß shows himself to be a modern colourist, who aims to evoke emotions and create dynamism from colour forms and planes that manage to move beyond two-dimensionality. This is further intensified by the use of shaped aluminium foil in order to extend the actual painting into real space.
