Ren Ri

Kaiser Ring Scholar 2015

Ren Ri works with live bees. His beeswax sculptures and his videos are created in a process of planned coincidence. In addition to studying art in China and Russia, the 31-year-old is also a qualified beekeeper. Ren Ri became famous for his Yuansu (form of life) series of works. In Yuansu I (2007-2011), Ren Ri had the bees build maps out of honeycomb. According to the artist, much attention was also paid to the fact that ‘it was only as a result of the interaction I had with the bees that I experienced the internal structural relationship of the origin of life’. This monograph provides an overview of Ren Ri's works from 2007 to the present day.
