Elisabeth von Samsonow

Transplants

Elisabeth von Samsonow’s wood sculptures give the impression of being witnesses from an unknown culture. They are figurative, carved from tree trunks, and painted. For Samsonow, wood represents the human body. She starts from the idea that bodies are able to express themselves, to expand, resound, vibrate, and speak. Samsonow’s mystical artistic cosmos includes sound, language, music, and performance elements, as well. She is a philosopher and innovative lateral thinker who – in addition to other fields of research – dedicates herself to updating and reinterpreting ancient and pre-modern knowledge in a visionary way. In her work, she therefore unites the apparent opposites of pure spiritual work and manual sculpture.

This catalogue brings together newly created groups of sculptures of recent years.
