Haiying Xu
The path of the Chinese artist Haiying Xu can be compared to a long process of realization. Grown up in the situation of radical change of China from a developing country to one of global economic power she later studies art in Germany on the quest to find herself. At one point she begins to focus on the world. She travels and with a new view she discovers also her own country. But China as she knew it in her childhood doesn’t exist anymore.
So Haiying Xu holds on to whose pictures before they disappear completely: Pictures of her childhood in the countryside, of ghosts, kings and mice princesses in fairytales and the mighty masks of the Peking Opera. With all the western tradition of modernism and every trick in contemporary painting she remembers these images, with feeling. Thinking of herself and her new big love: China.
