The Rhine-Herne canal offers unlimited potential when it comes to excitement and inspiration. It can also be used for identification purposes, both as a line of demarcation and a means of bringing people together. The “Bilder am Kanal” project – an outdoor exhibition of 15 large-scale tableaux that have graced the canal bank for the last 25 years – defines the Rhine-Herne canal as a ‘culture canal’, highlighting an artistic side to this wonderful resource. Working with five tableaux each, four artists make an impressive statement along the canal, freely interpreting the region and inspiring a diverse range of associations. The result is an aesthetic and intellectual investigation of the region´s phenomena, which every visitor to the canal can compare with and add to his or her own impressions. This accompanying catalogue spurs the artistic imagination and also creates a virtual experience for the observer who takes a stroll along the Rhine-Herne canal – a culture canal, now and always.
