DECALOGUE. LOST WORDS. CHIHARU SHIOTA

Dekalog: Lost Words

With the spectacular installation LOST WORDS—curated by Frizzi Krella and Christhard-Georg Neubert—the internationally renowned artist Chiharu Shiota (*1972) transformed the interior of the Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas’ Church) in Berlin into a space of entirely new thoughts and associations. A dense web of black threads in which pages of the Bible from various eras, translations, and languages are interwoven is an allegory for the global complexity of the Reformation and the message of the Bible. In her installations, Shiota frequently makes use of found objects such as shoes, windows, or suitcases. Webs of wool threads woven in exhibition spaces have become a trademark of the artist. The publication provides insights into her work based on numerous photographs and accompanying texts.
