Egyptian Textiles from the Late Ancient and Early Islamic Era
in the Chemnitz City Art Collections
Fabrics that narrate history: The extensive and high-quality collection of Egyptian textiles from the late ancient and early Islamic era in the Chemnitz City Art Collections was not acquired by the museum itself, as in the case of other large European collections. It was the generous donation of the Chemnitz-based entrepreneurial Vogel family that brought these valuable fabrics into the collection. The textiles bear witness to the life and culture of the time with wonderful ornaments and embroidered elements. They are consequently more than merely textiles; they also narrate a piece of cultural history. The new publication by the Chemnitz City Art Collections provides extensive insights into the collection and elucidates the history behind the textiles.
