Anne teaches Mary to read
Zum Annenkult um 15000
Depictions of St. Anne have always exerted a particular fascination. With the iconographic one-room exhibition Anne Teaches Mary to Read—The Cult of St. Anne around 1500,the LUDWIGGALERIE, in cooperation with the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum Aachen, has once again dedicated itself to a masterpiece from the Peter and Irene Ludwig Collection. The starting point is a very elaborately crafted group of French sculptures from the mid-fifteenth century. It depicts the enthroned Anne teaching the little Mary to read, a pictorial theme that developed within the context of the Cult of St. Anne. This theme received ever-increasing attention in the Late Middle Ages and the early modern era and subsequently gained general popularity in the Baroque. The publication provides an overview and shows the development of the Cult of St. Anne.
