Ulrich Wüst
Public and Private: East Germany in Photographs
Ulrich Wüst (* 1949), a trained urban planner, began photographing East German cities in the 1970s. Today, his work is recognized as a critique of city building in the GDR and one of the most important photographic records of the socialist state. Since 1990, Wüst has continued to focus on urban subjects especially the transformation of reunified Berlin. In this first monograph, Gary Van Zante publishes 200 photographs, including the distinctive leporellos; his writing and a rare interview provide insightful context for Wüst’s work in the history of photography and the urban history of Berlin.
