Ich, Theo Mayer
Künstler in Wuppertal
In 1986, at the age of 56, Theo Mayer, an architect in Wuppertal, decided to close down his architect’s office, ready to reconnect with his early work and to become a painter. During his time with Pina Bausch’s dance theatre, he reached his creative pinnacle as an architectural designer. However, in 1989 he chose a surprising new point of departure: he began to using packing materials and protective plastic – rejects created by our consumerist society – to make objects and elaborate staged presentations; an absurdist theatre and an exceptional contribution to the new genre of “installation art”.
The book presents works by Theo Mayer, texts on sources from his diary, and texts by “eye witnesses” who helped him with his extensive investigations and searches: a design autobiography whose chronology is guided by the editor/commentator.
