Die Galerie der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig 1980-2005
Since its official opening in 1980, the Academy of Visual Arts Gallery has played an important role within the art world. A unique institution in Germany – no other academy of art has such a gallery – its integrative position allows the embedding of teaching in international exhibitions; in the GDR, the gallery was also important as an exhibition space of museum standard. The first GDR exhibition of influential foreign art was successfully held here. The gallery inspired and participated in artistic and theoretical discussions making a not inconsiderable contribution to German-German cultural exchange before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
