Monument der Fragen

Über Kunst als rituelle Praxis und symbolische Form

There are eternal questions, there are questions with no answers, and indeed the present day does raise many questions. The Church Congress 2005 had as its motto “When your child asks in time to come …” (Deuteronomy 6.20); this was the catalyst for a city-wide collection of questions to create an art project. The people of Hanover were asked to write down their questions for God and the universe on coloured pieces of cloth. Families, neighbourhoods, schools, church communities, political parties, trade unions, groups of senior citizens, allotment gardeners and even the fire brigade took part. Shirts, old sheets, tablecloths, curtains, discarded summer dresses, skirts and other fabrics from homes in Hanover were used to produce the strips of cloth. Right on time for the Church congress, the cloth strips were installed on a 20-metre-high wooden construction by young climbing experts during an artistic ritual and event in the city centre. And so, a public symbol of the important issue of asking questions and Hanover’s contribution to the Church Congress came into being.
