Joachim Berthold

In the works of the German sculptor Joachim Berthold (1917–90) we encounter a highly elegant, polished, thorough kind of sculpture, which has, of course, its roots in the past, but which formulates general concepts of creation, creativity, man and mankind which change little as they pass through the ages.
What makes Berthold’s works so fascinating is that he also points to the future, and that many of his sculptural principles can be seen in contemporary art. This not in a general, a common sense, not as a truism in any way, rather in an indispensable manner to bring out what is contained within the artists materials – and in his mind.
