the site the sound requires — über den hörwert XI
How does a site sound?
How can a sound be registered and communicated?
Is it possible, to reproduce a site via its sound? These are the questions that the German sound artist Helmut Lemke investigates. In order to answer them, he spent several weeks in different sites shaped primarily by natural producers of sound like wind and water, where acoustic events are collected. The obvious method of technical sound recording, however, was not very satisfactory when attempting to capture site-specific sounds in their own context. Media like drawings, journal notes and photography thus became more relevant and more useful in this reflection of the complex sound of a site. The catalogue brings together Lemke’s acoustic experiences via drawings, text, photography and sound (on the enclosed CD).
