Bernd Koberling
Volume of Silence. Painting 1999 – 2007
The artistic work of Bernd Koberling could be viewed as resembling landscape paintings; created in series and using diverse techniques. The closer he gets to nature, the more Koberling distances himself from descriptive portrayal: his paintings become freer and more open.
Bernd Koberling has spent several months of each year in Iceland for the last 30 years. The watercolours he paints in Iceland have had a significant effect on his artistic practice of recent years. Since 2000, he has painted large works, up to 9 metres wide. He adds small islands of paint and vibrant colour washes, leaving large areas of the white chalk ground untouched.
Thanks to the transparency, weightlessness and flowing movement of the paint, these paintings have much in common with the watercolours that he paints in a natural environment, transposing these earlier works into a kind of exorbitant visibility.
