Nolde bis Picasso
Eine Privatsammlung expressiver Graphik für das Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum
The collection of Dr Jürgen Sager is being presented for the first time, in the Braunschweig Kupferstichkabinett. The collection grew over a period of five decades; this book contains a selection of one hundred of the most beautiful works.
German Expressionism is one strong point, especially work by Erich Heckel, Emil Nolde, and then from the First World War on to include Max Beckmann, Käthe Kollwitz and Ernst Barlach. Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) artists like Otto Dix and George Grosz are also represented as is abstract art from before and after the Second World War, Hans Arp and Willi Baumeister and – moving beyond Germany – representatives of the European avant-garde from Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall to Henri Matisse. Furthermore, there are graphic works by artists from the former GDR, including Wolfgang Mattheuer and Gerhard Altenbourg.
