Hans Günter Flieg
Documentary Photography from Brazil (1940–1970)
Hans Günter Flieg emigrated with his family from Chemnitz in Germany to São Paulo in Brazil in 1939. Even as a child he was fascinated by photography; he began his photography training with a course in Berlin and continued in his new homeland, later becoming a respected freelance documentary photographer.
In addition to their powerful documentary realism, the photographs of Hans Günter Flieg also display his search for the classic theme. His works are evidence of the progressive changes in Brazil, as it became a modern industrial nation, via portraits, landscapes and architectural images. This catalogue shows the art practice of the photographer and aims to provide an art-historical framework for his work.
