Veit Mette

Veit Mette’s photographs show the living spaces of primarily Turkish and Kurdish teenagers. The third generation of one-time migrant families – ‘Generation Üç’ – treads a fine line between traditions: in school, the mosque, clubs, and on the street. Behind the façade, and as a result of what is commonly called ‘integration’, there is often an inner conflict, in which a sense of being adrift is sometimes also used as an escape. And when the escape attempt fails, the kids are not always just victims. Here, ‘homeland’ is often just the imagining of a parallel reality, a bit of naïve romanticism, for which there is otherwise little room. Facing tough reality is not something they always aspire to. By contrast, reality speaks from Veit Mettes’ colour photos – here tender, there brutal and bitter. No, life’s not always a laugh. Reality lies behind the words of the kids, laid over the soundtrack of the lives of ‘Generation Üç’. In Germany, 2009.
