Artists’ Posters from the GDR 1967–1990

Donation Margrit und Gerd Becker

Despite all the cultural-policy restrictions and repression in the ‘closed society’ that was the GDR, a rich, sophisticated range of artistic expression was possible. This is evident from numerous artists’ posters, especially from the artistic centres of Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, Halle and Chemnitz, the former Karl-Marx-Stadt, which were fashioned into their own exhibitions in galleries and museums by major artistic personalities such as Max Lachnit, Gerhard Altenbourg, Carl Friedrich Claus, Max Uhlig, Nuria Quevedo and Willy Wolf. The majority of the 100 posters presented in the catalogue are predominantly expressionistic in nature, and influenced by the informal. An impressive range of expression can be seen, determined by the line and by black and white, and extending all the way to the grand colourful gesture.
