Photographer Boris Smelov (1951–1998) was a legend oft the St. Petersburg school of photography and received adoration from anyone ever connected with the art of ‘light-painting’. The name of Smelov is well-known to photographers, collectors, critics and historians of photography. And its impossible for contemporary photographers from St- Petersburg to avoid his influence. The publication shows the images that he created of St. Petersburg which are not only remarkable photographs in their own right, but quite simply the most expressive portrait of the city made at the last century. The creative work of Boris Smelov is intimately connected with St. Petersburg, dedicated to St. Petersburg, and determined by St. Petersburg. At the same time, it approaches universality and his works stand alongside the most significant masterpieces of world photography.
