Purple Brown Grey White Black - Life in Death

Dying and death have become taboo subjects: we are living longer, old age is often defined by frailty, illness and loneliness. People die in hospitals – on the social margins. Daniel Schumann’s photos make death visible, with all the pain and suffering that is part of terminal illness but also with the certainty that goodbyes can be said with peace and dignity. His work reveals death in all its humanity, within reach in the here and now. The photographs, which were taken over the space of a year, show people who lived in the hospice during this period. People come and go, some stay for longer, others shorter periods of time. In the same way that the seasons, the light and the colours change, so too does life. Death represents the end for individuals. The cycle of life continues however. People die, people are born.
