Robert Rotar. Life and Work 1926–1999
The Foundations of his Picture Worlds and Concepts
The motif of the spiral defined the individual and unmistakeable work of the painter Robert Rotar throughout his entire life. As a symbol of the infinite, the primordial and the eternal, it is the key to his work, thought and understanding of the world. Scientific and philosophical ideas also figure: Jewish-Cabbalist, alchemist, and planetary ciphers, the Tarot, numerology, metaphysical, mystical and magical approaches as well as “coincidentia oppositorum” – the unity of opposites, death and life, death and love, death and change.
For the first time, this publication presents a fundamental, comprehensive and scholarly analysis of the life, work and art-theoretical concepts of Rotar: his ideas, visual world, philosophical and scientific influences, symbolism and iconography.
