Hans Georg Koehler

Physis

Hans Georg Koehler’s art is closely connected with the quest for a technique of expression that is adequate for the particular motif. After a long period of preoccupation with concrete, abstract forms his recent works give evidence of a contention with figurative painting that, as he himself states, has always led a subterraneous existence in his production. In order to accentuate the figure as a whole, Koehler empties the pictorial space of all staffage or confronts the scenic figuration in the painting with geometrical refractions. Thereby he designs the physical materiality of the paint itself into the gestural aspect of the figure and force the paint equaly into form and physique.
