Christina Doll

The sculptor Christina Doll always produces full-figure portrait sculptures. Her miniaturise porcelain figures brought her to public attention; here the focus was on compression into precious, fragile jewels. Doll’s most recent series moves in a completely different direction: Monumental cement sculptures confront the viewer with the bare and honest treatment of a corporality that deviates radically from the usual ideal of beauty: “Elli” and “Herr Fuhl” are portrayals of infirmity and old age, “Bobby” is characterised by a genetic disease and “Vivi” embodies a giant with the smile of the Madonna. With narrative perspicacity and artistic mastery, Christina Doll lends a natural dignity to her works, despite their size, and with great sophistication and self-reflection enables them to differ significantly from the pathos of traditional monumental sculptures.
