Work is what counts.

The modern world of work is changing radically. Even so, work has always been more than a requirement for survival. Work gives our lives meaning and accords us social status. A life without gainful employment is neither possible nor even conceivable for most Germans. This book accompanies the exhibition of the same name in the Foundation of Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik in Germany that look at changes to work and its future from a historical perspective while also making reference to current debates. It focuses on structural changes in employment in Germany, using concrete examples to explain the reasons for these changes: the development from an industrial to a service society, the effects of rationalisation and technological change, changes in female employment and the challenges of rapid globalisation.
