Undiscovered Meteors

Ludwig Meidner – Ernst Barlach

The painter, graphic artist and poet Ludwig Meidner is one of the most fascinating modernist artists and one who worked in range of genres. His work, a reflection of social changes and personal crises, persuades through its passion, sensitivity and obstinacy. This publication presents Meidner’s art from the 1910s – eruptive “Apocalyptic Landscapes”, vivid portraits and self-portraits, tense street and café scenes, cryptic portrayals of prophets – in a dialogue with the major works of Ernst Barlach and presents the literary work of both artists, bringing two masters of German Expressionism together, who are usually viewed as polar opposites. Beyond the clichés of the urban rebel Meidner and the pious recluse Barlach, this book offer a view of the diverse view of humanity of both artists – and uncovers noteworthy parallels.
