Vietnamese art scene

It is only since the 1990s that contemporary art in Vietnam has been able to evolve fully. Even if the development proceeded hesitantly at first, numerous exhibitions were soon taking place, international relationships were forged and art galleries were opened – an art market was born. This catalogue is the first German-language compendium of art in Vietnam since the beginning of the 1990s. It introduces artists whose contributions to the current artistic development of their country illustrate above all the backgrounds to and the processes involved in the emergence of a contemporary national art scene. These individual positions address social and socially relevant themes in an innovative and multi-faceted way. Taboos such as sexual identity are a major theme, but corruption, conflicts with tradition, the war and its long-term effects are also addressed.
