Hackstücke No. 1. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner:
Three Nudes in the Forest
The Wilhelm-Hack-Museum is launching a new series of exhibitions and publications entitled Hackstücke (literally ‘Hack pieces’), which examine more closely the origin and impact of the main works in the museum’s own collection.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s painting “Three Nudes in the Forest“ (1934/35) is the focus of the first project in this series. This work is one of the most important examples of Kirchner’s later abstract style. It concludes a creative process that lasted several years during which Kirchner developed his ideas using photographs, drawings and woodcuts before ultimately transferring them onto canvas. Both the exhibition and catalogue reconstruct the fascinating history of the painting and provide a wonderful insight into the artistic practice of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.
