Donatella Landi

The work of Italian video artist Donatella Landi remains largely undiscovered in Germany. The main focus of her work is nature. Landi, who enjoys referring to existing series of works and addressing topical issues, and in the process re-evaluating them, refers to her earlier Zoo installation in this new work relating to the Lower Rhine area. In her video installation, she juxtaposes views of the idyllic landscape of the Rhine region with film sequences from the Italian zoological gardens – in the narrow space between the projections, the viewer is left with no alternative and becomes a direct part of the situation. By integrating the audience in the tense confrontation between humans and animals the artist succeeds in creating an extraordinary emotional focus which impresses with subtle images and without an ulterior motive to educate.
