Now what
Since 1989, more than 1.5 million people have turned their backs on eastern Germany. Of this figure, twice as many women than men have left the region. The resulting gender imbalance is particularly serious in structurally weak regions: statistics show that there are only 65 women for every 100 men. The number of women continues to fall, making this population imbalance a unique phenomenon throughout the world.
Photographer Gesche Jäger has travelled to the region, asking why these men remain, despite the prospect of a bleak future. She meets mostly young, poorly qualified men who are deemed to be underprivileged in terms of education, development and success in finding a partner. The photos provide a profound insight into a group on the margins of German society. They are not intended to offer proof of personal or social failure but consist of a series of individual, moving portraits.
