Cultural Transfers No. 2
Cut & Mix – Cultural Appropriation and Artistic Statement Contemporary Art from Peru and Chile
The exhibition and catalogue “Cut & Mix – kulturelle Aneignung und künstlerische Behauptung” (Cut & Mix – Cultural Appropriation and Artistic Statement) presents the work of nine contemporary artists from Lima and Santiago de Chile. They confidently combine different cultural contexts and disciplines in their installations, sculptures, drawings and videos. Their use of “foreign” material is not a scientific device but is at times fictionalising and also presumptuous in its claims, yet therein lies the particular quality of the works.
At the same time, this artistic treatment also reflects everyday life in South American cities, where a long history of immigration and emigration means there is constant pressure to adapt to new living conditions.
