Sibylle Springer

Gleam

Sibylle Springer’s paintings show intermediate states: graffiti painted on the dark tunnels of the New York subway on which a passing flash of light falls during a train journey. These images are saved by the artist from being kept completely hidden. Or rain-filled streets where everything is blurred and shimmering. Springer has a unique ability to present phenomena which would otherwise escape our notice or appear scarcely more than fleeting coincidences. But she does not freeze the ethereal, the vagueness, the uncertainty but succeeds magnificently in enabling the viewer to experience the special quality of these phenomena. The viewer is thus taken on a journey to worlds which he or she has never experienced with such a concentrated intensity and witnesses something quite different depending on how far he or she stands from the painting.
