Shadow & Substance
Nine exhibitions at the Kunstverein Schwerte
For two years, Kunstverein Schwerte curated a very special project on the work of two artists: Christian Freudenberger and Markus Karstieß.
The cave as a place of creativity formed the focus of interest and - without any pre-determined “master plan” - two artists were invited to develop their own ideas and projects. Both the selection of the artists and the projects themselves were relatively random – a world away from the usual projections of a curator’s ideas – which led to an accumulation of fascinating contributions from the artists.
This book documents the finished projects and how the “invisible and visible, public and private, artificial and natural” are questioned, producing inspiring moments of visual thought for the viewer – and thus opening “ a hot window into contemporary art”.
