Michael Morgner

Paintings 1985-2008

The Chemnitz artist Michael Morgner intersperses his abstract paintings with figurative metaphors of basic human experiences: the figures ‘Angst’ (Fear), ‘Schreitender’ (Man pacing) and ‘Aufsteigender’ (Man climbing) are a constant theme throughout his entire oeuvre. His works are usually large-format and have several parts; their expressive visual language is made up of various mixed media on paper and brings together pen and ink drawings with embossed prints, etchings and lavage technique. The surface of the painting is often reworked; individual sections are peeled off. This publication accompanies the exhibition in Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz and is also an inventory of the works of Michael Morgner that are belong to the museum’s collection.
