The heartbeat of fashion

Works from the F. C. Gundlach Collection

This book presents photographs, from the viewpoint of the Collector, from the F. C. Gundlach Collection from 1860 right up to 2006, and so illuminates the changing role of witness of the medium of photography. The exhibition focuses on photography that reflects the image of people through their external appearance: fashions, poses, facial expression and gestures. The Collection gives ‘fashion’ the definition of zeitgeist; this means that non fashion-photography must also be taken into consideration, that this also plays the role of witness. Furthermore, the book shows how F. C. Gundlach constantly changed his concept, chose new foci, and reacted to changes in our society.
