Elisabeth Wagner
The stowed space
Elisabeth Wagner’s sculptures take an abstract approach, yet their form is figurative and they make reference to the surrounding space, to its architectural and historical conditions.
Since 2000 Wagner has been working with portraits and has created sculptures based on famous portraits from painting history. Working freely with different materials, like cardboard, plaster, bubble wrap and wire, she contrasts the painterly visual language of the original with the means of expression and design of her sculptural works. The modelling of fine nuances of spiritual expression and the cool distancing of the painting have the effect that the sculptures – unrelated to place and time – become physically present.
