People in the Warehouse

Rudolf Holtappel – Photographs from 1964 to 1995

Rudolf Holtappel – an icon of German photography – visited Karstadt warehouses throughout Germany between 1964 and 1995. The black and white photos which he took do not show the department stores or the displays or the merchandise but instead focus on the people in this huge microcosm.
Holtappel's previously unpublished photographs are a perceptive narrative, an investigative and humorous look at customers, sales staff, propagandists and – in terms of emotions – (un)attainable dreams of merchandise. With photographic precision, Holtappel takes an interest in his protagonists, who reflect the world and humanity as a whole in microcosm on their stage – the warehouse.
