Winfried Virnich

The work of the painter Winfried Virnich opens a chapter of the history of painting of the 20th/21st centuries. In this representative selection of paintings and drawings, the continuity of Virnich’s work from three decades, from 1982 to 2011, is presented:
painterly use of coloured line on the surface, the ‘grey pictures’, within which the potential of many colours combines, the juxtapositions and overpainting of separate colours and, at times, the extreme interference of the rupture of boundaries. This is an expansive development that demonstrates the unique materiality and transparency of these paintings.
