From Trash to Treasure

The value of the worthless within art

From the early 20th century to the present day, artists have constantly addressed the politically, economically and culturally charged issue of waste, how it is defined, what its potential is and how it is used. This review shows how items that are worthless and left behind are transformed by the artistic gesture. Covering three key themes, this exhibition presents 70 contemporary and historic works which address the relationship between art and material value, the effects of the diversity of materials on traditional panel painting and attitudes to the history of the usage of the discarded.
