Alexander Wolf

At the Beach / Death

Alexander Wolf manipulates the photograph to such an extent that the viewer no longer knows if the work is a silkscreen print, a collage on the computer or an actual photograph. Motifs are reduced to the required minimum in the colour fields, resulting in a silhouette-type colour field effect. As with his solarised photographs produced between 2000 and 2006, the abstract quality of Wolf’s motifs means that he pushes the boundaries of legibility in these new works, which he describes as ‘cut-outs’. The motifs traverse the grey area between realism and abstraction. The colouring is reminiscent of a 1950s aesthetic, emphasising the striking nature of the works. These bold motifs, devoid of text, provide an associative space and offer a narrative guideline while at the same time allowing the viewer enough room for his or her own emotional interpretation.
