1887 travels to Germany Subsequently studies fine arts in Hamburg and Berlin and works as a caricaturist for various humorous magazines
1907 lives in Paris, turns to painting
1911 cubist experience in Paris. Develops his characteristic style of the prismatic effect of the pictorial space
1919-1932 master artist at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau
1918–1920 produces most of his woodcuts
1937 defamed by the Nazis. Returns to the USA
