bipolar - Martin Schnur
63 Works on Canvas, Copper and Paper
A virtuoso‘s use of different levels of reality, a picture-within-the-picture approach and the motif of reflections are characteristic traits in the paintings of the Vienna-based artist Martin Schnur. This irritating play with the imaginary, with perception and awareness holds a potent appeal for viewers, awakening their interest in his paintings and opening up space for reflection. In his paintings, Schnur challenges our experience of what is real through deliberate formal ruptures which create a state of uncertainty but also focus the attention on the painting itself as a subject of pictorial artistic exploration. The artwork of Martin Schnur poses questions rather than providing answers and the present publication provides an overview of Martin Schnur’s artistic output since 2002.
